2023·Verblio·Product Leadership

5x revenue. Bootstrapped. No playbook.

Built the product and design organization from zero over 4.5 years at a bootstrapped two-sided content marketplace. Drove 5x revenue growth without external funding while staying hands-on IC.

The situation

Verblio was a two-sided content marketplace bootstrapped with no VC backing. When I arrived in 2018 as the first product hire, the product team was one person: me. The design team was also one person: also me.

What I built

Over 4.5 years, I built the product and design organization from zero — hiring four people, developing them into promoted roles within a year. Drove 5x revenue growth without external funding. Led strategy, OKRs, and cross-functional execution at the executive level while staying hands-on IC.

The needle-mover: a 3-day fix

The most impactful single project had nothing to do with roadmapping. Writers weren't changing behavior after a major algorithm update because nothing in the UI told them it had changed. Watched FullStory for 10 minutes. Saw the problem: numeric "need" scores (1–5) meant nothing to writers. Changed them to plain language (Lite → On Fire). Added a competition indicator. Rewrote helper text. Three days. Content delivered under 96 hours jumped from 60% to 90% — a trend that held for two years.

The hardest project: Multipass

Led the most technically complex project in company history: a full replatform of the billing and subscription architecture. The old system was quietly blocking customer experience, writer pay accuracy, business analytics, and pricing strategy — all at once. Led a cross-functional fellowship of six. Wrote vertically sliced user stories for parallel development. Designed phased migration with a communications strategy. A mid-level engineer was promoted to senior. The junior PM I was coaching earned her promotion.

What it proves

Bootstrapped product leadership looks different from funded product leadership. There's no cavalry coming. You learn to find leverage in UX, in process, and in the people you develop — because that's all you have.
